A wood pergola gives you dappled shade at noon and nothing at four o'clock, and it gives you nothing at all in the rain. It's a beautiful object that solves about a third of the problem.

A louvered pergola solves all of it. The roof is made of rotating aluminum blades that turn through a full 120 degrees. Open them for filtered light and airflow. Close them and you have a waterproof roof — genuinely waterproof, with gutters, not "mostly dry." One remote, and the same structure works in full sun, in a downpour, and on a perfect October evening.

The specifications that matter

Louvered pergolas are sold at wildly different price points and it isn't obvious from a photograph why. It's in the numbers.

What these actually mean:

6063-T5 is a structural architectural alloy with a specified temper — the material used for commercial curtain wall and window systems. Lower-cost pergolas frequently use thinner, unspecified extrusions. The difference shows up in blade deflection over a long span and in how the structure behaves in a storm.

157 mph is a hurricane-force rating. We are not on the coast, but Lake Norman sees severe thunderstorm downbursts every year, and this rating is a large part of why we're comfortable putting our name on the install.

70 lb per square foot with the louvers closed is the roof's distributed load capacity — the number that matters for the occasional ice or wet snow event that puts real weight on a horizontal surface. It also tells you this is a structure with genuine reserve strength, not a decorative frame.

IP67 is a certified ingress protection standard — dust-tight, and protected against temporary immersion in water. The motor is internal and waterproof, and for a structure with a motor and lighting built into it, that's the spec that decides whether the electrics survive year ten or fail in year three.

How you'd actually use it

The louvers rotate through a full 120 degrees on demand from the remote.

Fully open — up to 80% ventilation. On a still summer evening this is what you want; the blades are edge-on and the structure nearly disappears overhead.

Partially open — the position most people use most of the time. Angle the blades against the sun's position and you get shade with airflow. Because the sun moves, so does the ideal angle, and adjusting it is a button rather than a project.

Fully closed — a sealed roof. Rain runs into the integrated wide gutters and away, and you stay dry underneath.

That last capability is what separates this from every wood pergola and every fixed-louver structure. Weather changes and the roof changes with it.

Integrated LED lighting

LED strip lighting is built into the louver blades themselves — not surface-mounted, not clipped on afterward, not a string of bulbs. It's integrated into the structure, and brightness is controlled from the same remote that moves the blades.

This matters more than it sounds. Aftermarket pergola lighting always looks aftermarket: visible cable runs, mismatched fixtures, a transformer hanging off a post. Blade-integrated LED lighting is invisible during the day and produces even, indirect light at night without a glare source in anyone's eyes.

Sizing and layout

A single structure covers up to 16' 5" of projection by 22' 11" of width on four posts. That's a large outdoor room — comfortably a dining table and a seating group.

Multi-section configurations join units together for larger areas, which is how we cover a long patio or wrap an L-shaped space. Wall-attached configurations tie into the house and eliminate two posts, which usually reads better against the architecture and preserves floor space. Freestanding works where you want a destination away from the house — over a fire pit area, a spa, or a dining area at the far end of the yard.

The layout decision is mostly about post placement, and it's worth getting right on paper before anything is ordered. Posts in the wrong place ruin a furniture layout permanently. We'll lay it out with you against your actual furniture, not a generic rectangle.

Pergola or patio cover?

We get asked this constantly, and it's a real decision rather than an upsell.

A Sunspace patio cover is a fixed solid roof. Complete, reliable shelter, always. Available with insulated panels up to R-24, and designed to be enclosed into a room later. Choose it if you want a permanent covered space, if you're planning to eventually glaze it in, or if maximum insulation is the point.

A louvered pergola gives you control. Sun when you want sun, shade when you want shade, a dry roof when it rains. Choose it if the appeal of your patio is that it's outdoors and you don't want to give that up, or if you want a structure that adapts rather than one that commits.

Some clients do both on the same property — a covered patio adjacent to the house, a freestanding louvered pergola over a separate area. They're not competing products so much as different rooms.
